The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has arrived in Nigeria from Canada, marking a significant step towards his coronation. The monarch’s arrival at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos State was met with fanfare, as he was welcomed by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, alongside traditional dancers and drummers.
Oba Owoade, who arrived with his wife at around 6:25 pm on Wednesday, is set to undergo traditional rites in preparation for his coronation. Having recently received his certificate of appointment and staff of office as the 46th monarch of the ancient town from Governor Seyi Makinde, the new Alaafin’s arrival marks a significant milestone in the coronation process.
According to Owoade’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye, the monarch will visit various traditional homes in Oyo town to offer sacrifices, make appeasements, and participate in night rites. Following these rituals, Oba Owoade will enter Ipebi (seclusion) within the Alaafin palace to conclude the traditional rites.
The coronation is expected to take place within the next four weeks, as directed by Governor Makinde. With the arrival of Oba Owoade, the people of Oyo are eagerly anticipating the formal ascension of their new monarch.
