Violent protests erupted in Gwarzo on Sunday as angry youths allegedly set part of a government building ablaze over worsening insecurity in the area.

The unrest occurred in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State following repeated attacks by suspected bandits, which residents said had left many communities living in fear and uncertainty.

Eyewitnesses said the protest initially started peacefully, with hundreds of youths marching through major streets while chanting slogans and demanding urgent government intervention to address the growing security crisis.

The protesters later moved to the Local Government Secretariat, where the demonstration reportedly turned violent after some youths allegedly forced their way into sections of the premises.

Part of the government building was subsequently set ablaze, sending thick smoke into the air and causing panic among residents and passers-by, many of whom fled the area for safety.

One resident said frustration among community members had been building for weeks due to persistent attacks by bandits and what manydescribed as inadequate security response.

People are tired of sleeping in fear. The attacks have become too frequent, and there is no strong response. That is why the youths reacted this way,” the resident said.

Another resident appealed for calm, warning that destruction of public property would not solve the insecurity challenge confronting the area.

“We understand the frustration, but violence will not solve the problem. What we need is dialogue and urgent security action,” he stated.

Security operatives were later deployed across Gwarzo to restore normalcy and prevent further escalation, while authorities reportedly commenced efforts to investigate the incident and contain the unrest.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the development.
