Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged wealthy and influential Nigerians to use their resources, positions and intellectual abilities to improve the lives of the less privileged rather than exploit their influence to oppress others.
Makinde gave the charge at the official commissioning of a home for senior citizens established by popular Nollywood actress Shola Sobowale.
The governor commended Sobowale for establishing the facility, describing the initiative as a quiet but impactful intervention that would improve the welfare and living conditions of elderly people.
He said the project reflected the importance of giving back to society, particularly by providing care and support for senior citizens who needed a safe and dignified environment in their old age.
Makinde said, “Those who are blessed with wealth, positions and intellectual abilities should use these privileges to make life better for others, rather than using them to oppress the less privileged.”
He noted that the home also reinforced the traditional family values of caring for parents and elderly relatives, stressing the need for society to continue showing love and responsibility towards older people.
According to him, “This is a quiet intervention, but it is one that will have a significant impact on the lives of the senior citizens who will benefit from this facility.”structures
The governor further announced plans to improve access to the facility, disclosing that the road leading to the home, which is currently being rehabilitated by Lagelu Local Government, would be extended to its frontage.

He added that solar-powered streetlights would also be installed along the road to enhance security, accessibility and the comfort of residents.
Makinde said the additional infrastructure would ensure that the elderly people living in the facility could enjoy a safer and more convenient environment.
Another highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a book authored by Sobowale.
The event was attended by members of the Oyo State Executive Council and other dignitaries.
