_Ibadan, Nigeria_ – Former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have issued a warning to newly deployed corps members in Ibadan, Oyo State, to be cautious of fake housing agents who prey on unsuspecting individuals seeking accommodation.

According to reports, these fraudulent agents pose as legitimate property owners or agents, deceiving corps members into paying for non-existent or already rented apartments. The scam has left many new intakes stranded and financially exploited.

An ex-corps member, who wished to remain anonymous, shared her experience: “I was a victim of this scam last year. I paid N50,000 for an apartment that didn’t exist. It was a difficult experience, and I don’t want others to go through the same.”

The warning comes as the new batch of corps members arrives in Ibadan for their orientation program. The former corps members have advised the new intakes to be vigilant and take necessary precautions when searching for accommodation.

To avoid falling prey to these scammers, corps members are advised to:

– Verify the authenticity of property owners and agents
– Insist on physical inspections of properties before making payments
– Be cautious of unusually cheap or urgent offers
– Report suspicious activities to the authorities

The NYSC authorities have also been urged to take measures to protect corps members from these fraudulent activities.

Stay vigilant, corps members! Don’t let fake housing agents ruin your service year.
